GA Milestone Test Prep

This year Georgia will be using a new test with a different format. Here are some tools to help your child be successful!


FAQ about GA Milestone

Basic Information:

  1. Given in 3 sections:
    • 90 minutes to complete Section 1 (Day 1)
    • 70 minutes to complete Section 2 and 3 (Day 2)
  2. Weight:
    • Reading/Vocabulary = 53%
    • Writing/Language = 47%
  3. Types of questions: 60 questions total
    • Selected Response (Multiple Choice) = 50 questions
    • Constructed Response (Short Answer) to a Narrative Prompt = 3
    • Extended Writing Response = 1
      • Includes 2 passages
      • 3 selected response (multiple choice) items about the passages
      • 1 constructed response (short answer) addressing both passages
      • Essay Response (Argumentative or Informative Essay): requires students to cite evidence from both passages to support answers
    • Field Test Items (Questions they are trying out) = 6
  4. Different types of questions are worth different amounts of points
  5. Score: Students will points for correct selected response questions, and points in the constructed response as well as the extended writing response. Students can receive partial credit if they do not answer the question completely. The total number of points each child earns will show their level of understanding on a 4 point scale.
    • Level 1: Recall of information
    • Level 2: Basic Reasoning
    • Level 3: Complex Reasoning
    • Level 4: Extended Reasoning

Tips for this test:

  • Read the question carefully and understand exactly what it is asking
  • Go back in the story/passage and underline where you found your answer
  • If it requires a multi-part answer, be sure to answer ALL parts of the question
  • Use your RACE strategy
  • In all written responses use relevant evidence to support you answer
  • In all written responses use a variety of sentences.
  • PLAN your essay out
  • If you have time at the end, proofread and check your answers.
